Last week they were on the shallow docks early. By waiting until midday I can stand on the front deck and surf a few wake boat waves. Helps improve a fellas balance

The digestive acids are fairly strong. It doesn't take long at all for small shad and minnows to be digested. Id venture to say less than 5-6hrs if I had to guess, on something like small threadfin shad or something of similar size and composition. It wouldn't surprise me if they hadn't fed actively in that time span.

How do those lethargic fish take the bait? Soft subtle almost undetectable bite or do they hammer it. Did they travel any distance to hit it? Shooting docks on some days they hammer the bait. Feels lile a jolt of lightening running through the rod. Other days no detectable bite. The bait just doesn't feel quite right falling or you lost the feel of the bait falling. Sweep the rod up and fish on.

All good questions and thoughts Jack. In our limited years fishing for Crappie my wife and I have wondered the same things.
We have been lucky enough to "get on them" a couple of times. From the bank we usually struggle but we are often rewarded with a nice bream catch.
It's all good when you love being outdoors and on the water.

I'm not so sure it's always "neutral mood" Crappie that have empty stomachs. From my observations during cleaning, I'm estimating that over 80% of the time the fish's stomach was empty ... regardless of season, or the mood of the fish caught.
And yes, I have caught them with full stomachs ... most with Shad remains, but a few with "minnow" remains (and I may or may not have been using minnows at the time).
