    Just seems more noble for them to die in the mouth of a hungry crappie than being smacked on the pilings of a dock

    This tactic has been in my arsenal for 40 years. I typically use it during cold water months when crappie are schooled on drops and fishing close to them will spook them. I stay off from the school at least a long cast distance and normally work my bait UP the structure from deep to shallow. I hook my minnow up from the bottom thru the nostrils.
