Winter depth

I was just pondering, when fall is disappearing where exactly do my crappie and gills go. So what is the deepest water and at what water temp do YOU find cold water fish?

Found them in the dead of winter about 3 feet deep over top of 20 fow under a dock. I do not remember the water temp but it was in the teens air temp. The water was cold

Usually depends on the lake (type of lake) and water clarity in my neck of the woods, but I've caught them in <4fow next to the trunk of a fallen tree (on a tube jig) ... and about 8ft deep over 25fow on that same tree & jig ... water temps would be in the low 40's (Dec/Jan) ... air temps in the 30's-40's ... fishing from the bank (did not have boat at that time).

I've never experienced this myself but I watched Richard Gene catch crappie in cold water (whatever cold means on Guntersville) on the bottom of 30 fow. Just wondering if that is more normal than I would expect.

They pretty much can go anywhere they want for the next couple of months. 17 fow +/- 5 is my rule of thumb and check the whole water column.

I think the biggest thing is the region you live in whether you're in the north or south. For example the fish would not be as deep in Miami as they would be in Michigan. And then if you have a spring-fed lake then it will most likely hold an average temperature year-round. for me in South Alabama, I generally Fish 20 to 25 feet of water on the edge of a channel

Guntersville is where I was shooting docks in my post above. High 30's low 40's.

Gunterville is a unique lake. It stays full pool year round. The lakes above are draw down lakes. Most docks on it a structer built and not floating. I am 2 lakes North now on Chickamauga
