Could be a couple things, it’s possible your pound test is too high on your fishing line, it also could be the fishing line you use has alot of memory and therefore not allowing it to slide thru normally, that’ll definitely give you issues. It’s also possible the jig did sink correctly but you didn’t notice it because your bobber was still laying on its side and not straight up. If that’s the case you need a smaller slip float.

I have never really had much luck casting less than 1/16 of an ounce on a slip float. If you want to use a small jig, then you will also need a split shot. This keeps the float from banging on the jig knot, and will also save you from chasing the float down if you get hung up and break off, the weight will keep the float from sliding off the end of the line.

If you're vertical fishing, like through the ice, then you can get by with less. Unless there is a trick that I don't know about.

You do need to experiment with shotting to get the slip bobber working correctly especially when dealing with very light jigs or flies. Especially flies - get a can with a variety of smaller shot used by the fly fishing guys. Try it 8-10 inches above the bait and soon you will have it right. Make a note of what worked and setup in the future will go fast.
