    Default ? On Stripes

When we fish KY Lake we catch a lot of stripes, mostly very small in comparison to the large ones we see in you tube videos.
I know there are the quite large ones that are hybrids but my and I are curious as to how big the the ones as we catch can get?
We've caught many small ones but nothing I would call large tho some nice ones.
Also, are the stripes the ones with razor sharp gills?
We will be at KY Lake for a week starting Sept 27, just curious, getting excited about our trip.
Of course crappie will be on our mind.

    Thanks

    Alan

When you say stripes are you talking about white bass…or stripers? On KY lake the term stripes means white bass. I’ve caught thousands of them out of KY lake….anywhere from 14-19 inches. Most of the time they will school in same year class. Have had days when 18 inch fish were the norm and then had days where 13-14 inch fish were the norm. White bass at the 14 inch mark is a good fish. White bass do have razor sharp gill plates. If you’re talking about stripers the largest I ever caught out of KY Lake was 30 pounds but there are much bigger in the lake. Had days where 10 pounders were the norm….and they also have sharp gill plates. Hybrids are a cross between a white bass and a striper….caught many in the 5-10 pound range with an occasional fish in the 11-13 pound range.

    Regards

I'm wondering if you are speaking about yellow bass, which have stripes, but do not grow very large? I know they are common in Kentucky Lake as are the White Bass (which are normally called Stripes) and Striped Bass. Yellow Bass don't get much larger than 8 inches and are usually up in shallow water most of the year. All 3 of these types of bass have sharp gill plates.

Well now I am unsure, what we catch are usually small 8 inches or so and most often in shallow but I wouldn't consider them "yellow", interesting.
We went out with a guide once and caught many of the white bass, always wondered if those were also called stripes.

    Thanks Alan

Attachment 407821 This is what the yellow bass look like that I catch at KY Lake. They don't get very big and hit the minnow or jig very aggressive.

actual stripers get pretty big along with hybrid stripers ,white bass not much over a couple lbs.
yellow bass (don't have to be yellow btw) don't get much over a lb most of the time .
yellow bass act lots like bream , the others not so much .
ALL of them will shred your hands easily if not held right .

I think what he is catching are Hybrids. Striper/white hence Hybrid.
    Ky Lake full of them.

this is a yellow bass , the lines break at the anal fin , they are often not very yellow .
they rarely get big and are quite a nuisance , sometimes easily confused with "wiper" "hybrid striper" "palmetto bass" or whatever you want to call the juvenile hybridized version .
juvenile "hybrids" lines are dark like these on the yellow bass ,but don't break at the anal fin .
that and the tooth patch on the tongue will give them up every time
