My uncle had a larger Johnson reel that I used a lot back in the 60s, I loved it because I could cast it further than anything else.
You couldn't have teen a kid in the 80's without seeing these in all the outdoor magazines and the fishing shows. I sure wanted one of these, at that time they were out of my price range. The ability to cast a country mile was expensive.

Ah, the old pistol grip. That was all the rage for a while.
I’ve always admired the looks of those reels as well. Just never pulled the trigger. Great find!
Terrific find. I could never afford any decent equipment as a young kid. My dad wasn’t into the outdoors at all. I had a buddy with one of the Johnson spin casts. Worked great and I have always liked pistol grips on rods.

PS Should clean up nice. It doesn’t look to be in bad shape.

Nice find.
Those old Johnson reels were so smooth! Great drags compared to so many others too.
A Zebco 202 was $4 or $5 at the time. A Zebco spinning combo was less than $20. These were quite a bit more. I think the reels were more in the price of the Zebco 33. I will have to see if I can find some old ads with prices

Nice find I had a plain green one. Also had a Country Mile 6 that I bough to fish in a Crappiethon. I caught a tagged Crappie, but it wasn't the Country Mile one. That tag was only worth $20.
