I heard it said best hear. Jetskis are the worst thing ever until you are the one riding it than it is pure fun. It is the same with most everything. One can be courteous or not that is just one of the factors of the interaction you will have with someone.

It is not only the kids. I had my jon out one afternoon, and when I returned to the ramp, one of the local BIG boat dealers had a huge inboard backed down the ramp working on the engine. I motored as close as I could, and asked how much longer he was going to be blocking the ramp. He got huffy and said he just got started. I told him I needed to get my boat on the trailer. He reluctantly climbed down, and moved the truck and trailer. I took my own sweet time getting my trailer backed down and the boat secured. The fellow is a member of the church I attend, and he has never spoken to me since. No loss.....

I dont blame the kids on the ramp but I do the parents. Kids are taught what their parents have taught them. I have to watch my boat and kids at the same time sometimes backing down the ramp because parents are so out of it that they don't seem to care one way or another. I sure do miss winter fishing when ramps are clear and void of people.

Winter certainly puts a damper on swimming

Smaller Corps of Engineer lakes have designated ski areas but many don't stay there . I think more for safety than fishermen hating the wakes . Some areas are shallow and underwater hazards make these activities unsafe..

If some folks knew how much bad bacteria is in some of our smaller lakes are contaminated with they would swim / ski elsewhere . Several of the lakes in my area have lots of poultry , swine and cattle farms in the water shed . Most litter (manure ) is spread on fields in summer time . When we get a big rain guess where it goes ? You guessed it . A few years ago our local lake had a huge algae bloom which killed fish . COE shut down swim beaches after testing bacteria and algae levels . All they would say was a nutrient load hit the lake after a big rain . Bet you can also guess what that load was ? I figure politics and legalities kept officials from pointing finger at farmers .

The lake I grew up on had trees and stumps everywhere on the north end. Miles and miles of ease along and pick your way through them. Depending on the water level they could be just at the surface to 1 foot below. I would hate to fall off of a ski and slam into a stump. Not my idea of a pleasant time

Nothing personal Nimrod, we all have the right to enjoy the water. But those that feel that ALL the water is theirs and they don’t have to respect anyone else are my beef. Ignoring speed signs and generally being jerks keeps me in out of the way places and no wake zones as much as possible.

One young man stands out in my memory. I was in a small cove and catching a few fish when he came through the first time. I thought he wanted to watch, but he didn’t stop. I’ll bet he looped through that cove about 15 times or more, at speed and throwing wake every time. Finally I put the rod down and just stared at him for two or three passes til,he figured out I wasn’t going to do anything more until he left for good. A big lake and he chose to be a pain to me, I still haven’t figured it out and probably never will.

Unfortunately I have that happen quite a bit, although not in no-wake zones. I'll be the only one fishing a bay off the main lake and a ski boat will come literally 50-75yds off my side for multiple passes. I give them the raised arms shrug look and they usually get the picture and leave. I still dont know why they do it. Dont care? Dont know? Want to show off? Just want to be a jerk? I don't think we will ever know.

My uncle and I actually had this conversation a week ago when someone did it to us at 7:45 in the morning when we were the only boat on the lake. He said that person probably has no idea what so ever that they are being an annoying jerk, they have been in the ski boat life and have never been in a fishing boat.. They have no clue that their wake is annoying and dangerous to us. I stopped for a minute and figured he was probably right.
