Default How many of you lefties can use a right handed reel

I'm taking my wife's newbie nephew fishing this week and was told he's left handed. I will switch the handle of one spinning reel to the right but see if he can also reel line in with the handle on the left. Do most of you lefties use left handed reels or are you ambidextrous - which I am not.

I am very fortunate that I can crank right handed with the best of them. As a matter of fact, I don’t think I would like to use my left. Using the opposite hand is the most efficient, but not everyone can do it. Growing up in the 50s and early 60s you had to be flexible. That was another reason I liked the “odd numbered” Garcia Mitchell’s. It’s funny, I can do a number of things righty but at the core have to use my left.

I reel in spinning reels with my left hand and casting reels with my right hand. Have one left hand casting reel and hard time getting used to it! I am right handed. had to go look at the reels. Hard time remembering the difference between left and right hand reels. I'm right handed but with reels it's which hand you reel with rather than cast with,,,,,I think!

I crank bait casters on the right.
    Spinning reels on the left.
    Weird I guess.

I cast with left and reel with right. So, what does this make me?

I’ve had this debate with my buddies cause they claim I use a spinning rod wacky style. Being right handed and reeling right handed. They’re right handed and reel left handed.
My defense is that old bait casters and old Zebco 202’s and 33’s were all right hand retrieve and that’s how I learned as a kiddo. And they’re wacky for doing just the opposite of how we learned. Just my .02

That’s what I think as well. I was just lucky that reeling with the right just felt natural.

At 70 years of age, and being a lefty, have always adapted to the things, that would work best. Ambidextrous yes. Scissors right handed. Played guitar right handed too. Remember, only us lefties are in our right mind, lol.

I’m a righty. I cast with my right and reel with my left no matter the type of reel. All the righties I’ve seen cast right and reel right handed. I don’t like crossing over like his. It feels more natural for my dominant arm to control the rod and non dominant arm control the reel.

The reel gathers line, the rod catches the fish. For finesse fishing especially the dominant hand on the rod.
