Default slip bobber tangling with hook

I am a seasoned bass and walleye fisherman but I just took up crappie fishing last year. My slip bobber rig is a light action spinning rod equipped with four pound line and the usual slip bobber, split shot and gold hook. I have often used slip bobbers for walleye but I never ran into the very frequent hook tangled onto bobber problem that I now encounter. I used 8 pound line for the walleyes but I don't know if that explains why I never had very many bobber/hook tangles.

Is there something particular I should be doing with my rigging to eliminate or drastically reduce the problem described above?

I can tangle it like that with too snappy of a cast. If I quite putting as much whip into the cast it will go away. I have also noticed I could tangle it up on the back cast. It works better for me to move the rod slow enough on the back cast to keep everything hanging down. And then launch into a cast. If casting like one would with a lure were the back cast moves fluidly into the power stroke of the cast floats weights and hooks tend to grab each other as they change direction

The closer your slip bobber is to the hook, the less chance of tangled. slip bobber tangling with hook

Instead of a hook you might want to try a jig. The weight will keep you line flying straighter on the cast.

Pescador, thanks for the suggestion. Usually my split shot is crimped on the line about 6 inches above the hook, that makes myn lip bobber about 6 inches above the hook when I cast it. I don't think I want the shot much closer to the hook, but I will try it out.

Techno, I will give it a try., I assume you mean to use a jig and also eliminate the split shot. For simplicity I only utilize 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 oz split shot.

    Hey Jack,

You also might want to try flipping your bail to stop the line, just before the bobber hits the water?? Worth a try, and good luck. slip bobber tangling with hook

Yes , match the same size jig to split shot, just watch for the float sticking and getting caught on the your jig knot. Some floats do that .

If this start happening to me, I will put a BB size clinch weight just above the troublesome knot. Stops the float from sticking...
