This.....unless I'm in a tourney and need to keep the fish alive..... Putting them in a well iced cooler keeps the filets nice and firm.....

we used to ice fish in the chest , but remember this about that .....
when whacking and stacking in the summer months you must rotate fish often ....
they are 85 or hotter when they come out of the water ....
the ones on top of the pile will spoil really quickly ...
seen it over and over with the fish right on ice thing ....
the bottom fish are fresh and crisp as a spring cucumber and the fish on top are pale as a ghost and yucky soft ....
    just saying

Make sure cooler has a drain, layer of ice then the fish, through out the day keep layering ice and fish. As ice melts, drain it out, fish will be cold and ready to clean when you get home. Putting ice in a live well

For fish in the live well, you need to keep your water between 65 and 68 degrees for best results. I usually start a day with 30 lbs of ice and then fill the live well . I also add G Juice to the water. I've got a thermometer (portable) that I keep on the back deck and when the alarm goes off at 69 degrees, I add another bag and a little more G Juice. G Juice eliminates the chlorine in the ice and it doesn't kill the fish. Hope that helps a little.
