Trolling for crappie.

I’ve only trolled for crappie once. It didn’t turnout well. When I made a turn all my lines got tangled. Any instructions would be help full. Thanks in advance.

I take it you were long line trolling ?? And, yes, if that's the case .... any sharp or wide turn at speed is going to bring all your lines together.
That's one reason I don't long line troll, but Push my baits. Pushing = less line out to get baits down to desired depth, because you're using trolling weights vs long lengths of line ... turns are, therefore, less likely to result in tangled lines/baits (as long as the turn isn't extremely sharp for any distance). One other "pro" to Pushing is not having to reel the fish back in from long distances and giving them a chance to throw the hook.

I like longlining. You won't learn everything with only one trip out. In fact you will learn more each trip. Boat control and rod management are two biggies. Also giving yourself plenty of fishing area and making wide controlled turns are vital to keeping your lines from becoming tangled. Knowing when to speed up and slow down also. Never stop the boat with the lines out. Time on the water will teach you what you need to know for using this tactic.

I'd like to add, set your lines at different lengths. Makes it harder for the lines to tangle when they are set at different lengths. Plus your baits will run at different depths. Thus covering more water column.

as they said reduce number of rods initially to get a handle on what your doing and then make WIDE turns. Look at Mr Baker's video's as he does a great job of explaining how to pull cranks or jigs. would think pushing cranks would be easier for you mac, less movement required and sitting on front of boat.

One thing I've found that helps is to maintain, or even speed up a smidge in the turns. If I'm running 0.85mph trolling, I'll bump to 1.0-1.1mph in the turn. That also helps keep the jigs up off the bottom on the inside roads, depending on rod depth.

I'll second the Mr Baker videos. He does an excellent job explaining everything.

The key to trolling is a trolling motor that is connected to your GPS. It will keep you going in the right direction when you are pulling in your catch. Otherwise the wind will kill you. I have an XI5 and couldn't live without it.
