Family tradition (Mom's side) .... most of the time it was fishing for Crappie, with certain time periods set aside for the White Bass run in early Spring or White Bass jumps in early Summer, and Bluegill fishing in early Fall. Got into Bass fishing as a teen, with my neighborhood buddy, then with his older brother (when we were roommates). Fished the KY ABF tournament trail for a couple of years, until it became more like a second job ... that cost me $$ instead of making me $$. But even along the many decades of fishing for Bass, fishing for Crappie was never 2nd place in my mind. I'm pretty much a "multi-specie" angler, nowadays, but the emphasis is still 99% towards catching Crappie. A lot of that is just carrying on the "family tradition" & remembrance of my love of fishing with family & best buddies along the way, and some is passing on that love of fishing to members of this site.

Puts a big smile on my face, makes my ticker go Pitter pat pitter pat and erases all other thoughts from my cluttered head and I love fish popcorn.

Sometimes it's a blast to grab a bucket of minnows, a coleman lantern and spend a night catching a tasty meal
The love for fishing is one of the best gifts you can pass along

That's kinda of the thrill, just not knowing, and waiting, and seeing what it is. Big crappie, small one, bullhead, brim, bass, you just never know. And then pulling it in, the fight, waiting for the moment you figure it out, that's my thrill. Seems to bring me back to my youth!
I am of the same persuasion regarding not knowing what species bit the bait and anticipating what it is. Yesterday, I got a bite and I was thinking now this is sho nuff a big bluegill, which is what I was fishing for. After a good while, I could tell he's coming to the surface and, yep, it's a bass! That 16 incher jumped three times, it was a hoot. I caught one 4.8 lbs two weeks ago fishing for bream. I recently decided to fish for crappie and caught three real nice ones, then I caught a bass and I caught several bluegill.

I am starting to pursue crappie more and one reason is because, like bluegill, you can catch a number of them if they are biting. As a bass fisherman, if it's slow, it's real slow and even if it's fair, it can be kinda slow, lol. These days, I would rather catch 30 whatevers than 3 good bass. I continue to pursue ultralight angling.

Over my days, I have fished with a jig, tightline, probably more than any method, and I like to feel the thump of a crappie bite. Using a bobber is also fun.

Here is my long winded answer. I started as a 10 year old fishing rivers for catfish and small lakes and ponds for bass. In my 20s & 30s I gave up catfishing (too boring) and became a bass tournament regular. Soon that started to feel more like stressful work. Fishing should not feel that way so I devoted 80% of my time on the water to crappie & bluegill. My family prefers to eat panfish and fishing has again become less stressful for me since concentrating on them. Most of the fish I catch get released and even so I would rather wait for the spawn to end and find them in the deeper water.

    They are the best eating.
I fish some for bass, but seeing all the gear that one supposedly has to have for it makes it too expensive to do a lot of. Look at most bass boats and the 8 or more rods on deck with all the different lures...it's more than I care to deal with. One light spinning outfit and a couple jig poles and a smallish tackle box and I'm all set for crappie fishing. Who doesn't love the thump?
Everytime I mess with catfish I seem to wind up finned. I like to eat em but hate to mess with them.

We like to eat crappie and channel, so that's the main reason. It's also relaxing to be out on the water, even from the bank.
