    Default KY Lake Toad!

Had a couple of central KY guys down last September to learn how to pull cranks. Our trip ended as soon as it started when my 1 month old Ulterra threw a belt. I refunded their deposit but felt like crap about it. Nice guys!

I told them if they would come back this spring I would give them a deep discount on a trip. They came Thursday but we had to fish afternoon due to me having a Dr appt.

We started out on the main lake but soon it was 3 foot whitecaps and uncomfortable fishing even in a 23 foot boat. We had hammered the sauger( mostly within 1inch of legal 14”) and bass.

I hit a couple of spots but zero crappie. I finally swung for the fence and stopped on a less wind blown bank and we let the crankbaits out. Within a minute, one of the guys hung a huge crappie and got it 1/2 way to the boat before it pulled off. He was sick knowing he had just lost the biggest crappie of his life! I told him we would let things settle down and give it another chance.

One of them was very intrigued by my custom painted Picos, especially my Ky Lake killer green. We picked up several good crappie with one pushing 15”. Sauger too.

I decided we had waited long enough to give that big lost crappie another chance. I lined up on the exact track as the first. We all watched the Helix 12 as we got to that one waypoint. We passed over it and the stakebed below. Instantly the rod with the custom Pico bent big time.

The guy who had lost the first big crappie grabbed it and up popped a mouth the size of a baseball with a green Pico hooked in it. I told him to take it slow but not let the fish get its head back under water. He did a great job and I got to net the 16 1/2 inch white crappie, the fellow’s personal best by quite a ways. Of course I have no way of knowing if it was the same crappie but it didn’t matter.

There were handshakes, high fives, and back slaps along with a bunch of pictures. Name: IMG_2202.jpg

Did you get a weight on it?
