    Default Can I do this....?

    Hey guys,

I just got done fishing but only had 2 hours because of that dang ol thing called work! I caught about 5, but only 2 keepers. It’s 9pm, I have the fish in a styrofoam cooler covered in ice. I don’t want to clean just the 2 when I’m going back out tomorrow to try for more. Can I keep the 2 from tonight on ice until tomorrow night when I have more to clean all at once? Just want to make sure that’s safe. Thanks guys!

They stay on ice at fish markets all the time.

But I'll wager not with the innards still in them.

Yes, I was talking to myself; sometimes even I have to ask for expert advice.

I have seen them both ways. If it is going to be more than a day I prefer the innards be out

12 to 16 hours on ice if they went in alive is quite doable .
possibly considerably longer if its slush ice , but they tend to get a bit soft and discolored after about 24 hours in most cases though .
i typically call around 24 to 36 hours a maximum if you want to enjoy cleaning them .
a dead fish put on ice is a crap shoot .

I agree that your fish will be OK under the conditions you described. Their eyes can tell you. If the eyes are bright and clear, like they just came out of the water, they are OK. If cloudy at all, just trash them. About 16 hours is as long as they can keep.

Another thing to check on a fish is the gills
If they are red to pink your good , if brown, no good

Update: After another day of fishing I cleaned my fish....from what I saw, the fish that were kept on ice for 24 hours had a bit of cloudiness in their eyes, not extreme just a little and the meat was no doubt softer, not that nice firm fillet when you do it right when you get home. All in all they got cleaned and eaten......my GF and I gave them baptism by grease and were just fine, no one got sick lol. They still tasted good also! I won’t be making that a habit but atleast I know now
