Poor fishes !
just don’t have a chance!
so what if you survived a real bad cormorant bite .
I will still hook you in the mouth and toss you in someone's fish basket .
adding insult to injury is often what happens in this part of the world .
but before you blame me for the heartless act ,just me remember this.
the DING DANG DARN CORMORANT started it

I think you are onto something . Pre-filleted fish. Fresh and never frozen.

I've often wondered how may get nailed by 50MPH propellers.....
It's a good thing they are really good at spawning. They don't stand a chance of getting old!

the occurrence is often so common that about 2 out of 3 have these wounds in different stages of healing on some lakes and at the same time the lakes it occurs on have stupid large rafts of cormorants that winter on them and in some cases choose to stay year round as well .
and the other thing to notice about the wounds is it typically appears ONLY mid body and there is no way random prop strikes would ONLY hit the same spot .
and large cuts like seen above are only on larger fish and that is because they pull away in the struggle do to their size and strength and the hook on the beak scores them .
then there is the way cormorants hunt fish that comes into play and how they secure them , their beaks are hooked sharply and they grab the fish at its widest point as its the largest target . often times when they try to reposition a solid hit fish to swallow it ,the fish gets way on the momentary release and this wound looks like the one below and is just a hole type wound .
note the healed over wound on another fish from that spot.

Back in March I got into a good group of nice slabs. About every other one had sides freshly torn up like that. I’m thinking they had gone shallow for spawn and the cormorants got them then. The cold front had pushed them back deeper and that’s where I was catching them.
