always "swim" your jig before you drop it , watch it as you swing it by along the surface slowly .
if it don't "swim" right that might be the cause .
roadrunners are notorious for the spin thing and some other baits will as well .
if I encounter said twist I hand stretch the line a bit , typically as much of it as I am using .

I am assuming that you are not casting this rig. If so, then use a level wind reel..baitcaster..that does not induce twist.
The reel, in this case, just needs to store line. Strip off the length needed, by hand. YMMV

Yep, not casting. I had been debating giving a baitcaster a try on my jigging rod and hadn't thought of it helping line twist--gonna give it a test drive this weekend. I have a couple of new jigging poles that should arrive by the weekend, and several spare baitcasters laying around. Thanks!

I have the best luck using a simple spool type reel on my long poles during the warmer months since the fish aren’t deep.
This also keeps the weight down.
I “pitch “the jig a lot when fishing cover I can see from the surface.
Once I get some twist or kinks , I just peel out fresh line and re tie. = less wraps/tangles/ problems.
Like mentioned above keeping your jig “tuned “ so that it runs true helps but twisting and kinks will happen at some point.

The reel is not the cause of your twist nor will it be the cure. The jig is spinning when underwater.
