    Default Cleaning live fish

I have a soft spot for animals and it's pretty strong. If I keep fish to eat, they are dead, I put them on ice. Filleting live fish doesn't hit me right. A lake I fish is proposing to build a fish cleaning station at the launch. People would be cleaning live fish there out of their live wells. I would love to have a place to clean fish away from my house, a place to put the fish heads would be great but I'm not keen on the fish being subjected to live filleting. If I were to do it, I would put them on ice in my boat as I catch them. I realize that dead is dead but I dunno, if I were a fish, having a knife put through me just seems wrong, lol. Running out of air sucks, too, but, I do eat meat and something has to die to get meat. I'm open to input, what do you think about this?

Preparing a private cleaning location should allow you to clean at your comfort level. While public cleaning stations, most likely, will have you exposed to what others deem as an acceptable part of the fish cleaning process. Good luck and good fishing.
Pass the "Sportsman Baton" on before you're gone, promote values for others to hunt and fish upon.

My choices are suffocate one ice or get a knife stuck in me.........Hard Choice!

Personally I like filleting live fish much better, way less slime and just seems easier to me. Do what you like but portable fish cleaning stations are real easy! Ironing board, workmate and you can even run eclectic knives off an inverter and your boat battery if you don't want a cordless.

If one has an ironing board, that is to fillet on? If so, what is the Workmate for?

There may be more slime if on ice but seems to me there is more blood.

I like having a water hose right there, too. I rinse off my filet board every 2 to 4 fish, depending on how much slime and blood is there.

I don't like filleting them live either, plus it's a good way to end up with a new hole in your hand if they try to flop while you're sticking them with a sharp knife. Quick whomp to the head turns the lights out pretty quick.

That’s the LAW in Germany. I trout fished over there a few times. You have to bang on them at the time of catch, and then slit them just behind the gills. I didn’t know this when I first started and was kindly reprimanded by a local. I was just throwing them in a bucket and they noisily flopped. I received some dirty looks from other fisherman around me and I was like “uhh what??”.

I put em directly on ice, clean em on the kitchen counter, guts go in bag, bag goes in freezer till trash day. icing em down especially pie does create slime. I like to think they were just still drooling over the jigs I showed em.
Killing is different from natures harvest. Once caught a gofer in my yard and drove it to a vacant gofer retreat so it could carry on.

I like to bleed my fish and want them dead when it comes time to fillet.

I did a video on filleting fish for ExploreKyLake.com. They are on YouTube somewhere.
Cameraman wanted me to fillet crappie first. No problem since all the fish had been on ice for hours. Crappie went great.

Next came a channel catfish. Stiff as a poker! I filleted the one side and took skin off in one motion. No problem. Flipped the catfish over and it flopped! I thought what the heck, he’ll edit that out. Nope!

Video has around 100,000 hits and I’ve received every kind of threat, including death. That fish flopping set off a $&&$Storm with a bunch of bunny-humpers. I just ignore their comments but it would be nice to invite some of them over just to “make my day!”
