Default 6# hi vis mono. vs. 4 # Braid

Good morning All, I hope Everyone is safe & in Good Spirits today. Good Luck to All going out to get em today. Ok enough Salutations, I wanted to get your input on another topic my buddy and I were discussing: "What are the benefits of using 4# braided line over 6# monofilament?" I personally use 4 & 6 # hi vis. monofilament.

the braid in my opinion is good for a sore shoulder when they bite from the transfer of energy directly to your torso
its also good for bending hooks and pulling up brush piles along the way as well
and lets not leave out the part where it will flat out cut you like a knife
oh and then there is the wear and tear on your favorite rod guides
and it for sure positive can snap a nice rod tip off in the wind
and then there is that part where it sails in the wind AND water as well and wont go where you want it to
lets not forget the understated highly dangerous nature of any that stays behind in the outdoors
6 lb mono will snap if it has ANY wear spots
6lb mono will snap if the knot is not just right
6 lb mono will stretch like a rubber band on a hook set
6 lb mono typically has a spool memory that will drive you nuts
6 lb mono has a short life expectancy when used frequently
now mind you these are just some of the fine points in the never ending banter about what line and when and where and to be sure i use both for various reasons
in the end i prefer mono though as it "feels" right to me and i dont typically spend time "watching" fish bite and have to feel the bites and or have to have that just so so presentation to get bit that braid wont get done for me .
but when the situation is such that i might think i need to pull up something thats heavy and or i just want to get jerked out of my socks i use braid .
p.s. AND getting jerked out of your socks is not the same as being a jerk in socks , just saying

    Ketchn covered it pretty well.

Braid does not handle abrasion as well as mono. One little nick and it will pop, many times you won't even see it. It's pretty easy to see or feel when mono is about ready to pop.

I think there are pros and cons to both, which I why I use braid as a main line and a mono leader. Gives you the best of both worlds, the braid will last forever, stays out of the sharp stuff, and will not loop or twist. The leader is sacrificial, easy to tie, and takes the abuse.

    I can’t imagine using 4lb braid ( 95% of the time I use 12 or 14 ft poles).
I’ve been using 50 lb braid with a mono leader since the fish have moved up shallow this year
I don’t get memory kinks and the large braid is Much less likely to tangle on the rod tip in the wind.

the real small braid is a you know what to fish with , any little thing and its in a knotted mess you will NEVER undue ....
and when i say a knotted mess ,you have to see it to imagine it , its like WOW that is about impossible to make such a micro tough as steel spaghetti knot around the rod and everything else even if you tried to do it on purpose

    6# is 2# stronger than 4#?

Really don't think you can compare mono and braid and 4# braid might be diameter and not actual test strength.

I don’t do braid for crappies. I’ve witnessed the damage it does to very productive brushpiles by bass fisherman and crappie guys as well. All to get a fifteen cent jig back. I use braid for perch fishing in forty foot or more depths on Lake Erie here in Pa. but that’s all open water.
