I wish I had the money I wasted while trying to save money on rod holders before I bought my first set.

i made the my rail system from 3/4 EMT and used flag pole holders for bases. The boat came with a bunch of Millennium bases, so I used them. I used Driftmasters which I bought from Grizzly Jig. I wasn't trying to be cheap, but just wanted the stuff where I wanted the stuff. Lots of options with a round rail.

Not to High Jack the thread but is that SeaDeck?
Is it worth the money?
Hard to keep clean?
Thanks
Chuck.
Maybe PM me with your answer.

I've used Hills Rod Holders in the past and they were good, they have standard threading and made in USA. They come out at less than $10 each and they have several angles and lengths.
Thanks for all the input guys, I did go ahead and order the wire rod holders from ebay ( unfortunately before I read some more of your replies) but I think for the first go at it they will be fine. Like catchNgrease said, sometimes I have cost myself more money trying to be cheap (read frugal).
Look up drift master rod holders. You can replicate them very easily and put those rod holders to use. You just need the pipe clamps, aluminum tubing, stainless all thread and a star base. No welding necessary and unlike the ones I built you can disassemble completely in stow away when not in use

Thanks huntersdad, I will check that out for sure,
You can get all the supplies from Lowe's, or home depot that is except for the stainless rod. (Check either Amazon or McMaster-Carr for that.) You might get lucky and find galvanized there but I have yet to find any stainless. I'm just one of those kind of people that likes to build something with my own hands as long as it looks halfway decent. And trust me what it will cost you to build on your own verses to buy premade you can afford to make at least one mistake

I have the metal plasti-dipped rod holders. I bought them for a catfish rod bar. They are 3/8" metal "wire" and they seem sturdy for what they are. I talked to a buddy who told me that he had some like that and lost a rod and 2 monster fish because of them breaking at the weld. Obviously, a monster catfish is way rougher on equipment than crappie.
For the price, they're certainly a decent value.
