kevin rogers always talks about dingy shallow water up at headwaters of every lake is where he hunts big crappie. interesting discussion as usual thanks.

I use my 12 foot pole and pull the jig to tip and thread it thru brush to lil holes in shallow water in my knee boots and it's just a world of fun with a few inches of line dangling down! every lil stick or opening can erupt in a heartbeat and really feel the thump then.

Hdhntr, very interesting comment. I just got back from Ross Barnett and didn't see a fish caught except for mine. I was using a 14ft BGJP with the handle cut down and braid to slip in and out of the cover. Caught some very nice fish but had one problem, I only caught one at a time. Seems the rod could not get the fish up fast enough to keep from spooking everything around. My bites were just as you describe above. One spot was fairly reasonable in size so it took a bit of patience to fish it. Well while there, knowing the water very well, I witnessed 6 different boats fish the same exact spot, deep over a tree pile, nobody caught a fish but as soon as one boat vacated the spot another would pull in and do the same thing.
I cut myself while there, had to get stitched up so came home till the stitches are out. Yesterday I broke down the BGJP and switched the my cut down handle Wally Marshall Signature 14ft jig pole for the next trip. For a 14ft pole his action with the fast action tip section really lifts the Pigs up when you need it to. The length keeps my stealth approach "Stealthy". Someone needs to come up with a name for the style of fishing you are describing. Once I got hooked on the rush of the smokin' hard thumps I never trolled again.

past fun by a good bit for sure , we have a technique here that i am not sure i have seen done other places .
we find big thick floating log jams that are impenetrable and then pull the jig up to the rod tip tight and poke the rod down thru the woods .
then let the line out to drop the jig with the rod tip under the water surface and the sticks.
AND i probably just got in big trouble giving this secret up but oh well .....

Rojo, I’ve noticed at times the fish will be so scattered ( white crappie) there is only one male at each tree.
My dad started calling this type of fishing “short lining “ about 35 years ago.
Most people don’t have the patience to fish like this because you do get hung up a lot and you will loose some good fish when they get wrapped up from time to time.
It’s a style of finesse fishing that combines, line control, boat control, knowledge of the fishing waters and a large dose of patience.

dipping trees in the spring out of a boat is pretty tricky to do .
trying to hold the boat still and dip the jig and land the fish all at the same time was a real job
i often did it alone in my boat because of all the profanity that came out of my mouth .

Just got a new one in Monday, I carry 7 different ones in my truck . 4 ft to 8 ft and each has its own definitive use for what ever presentation is in order .
Most the time when I break rods it’s because of my concentration on a take and my hook sets. I zone when I jig and it’s me against the fish ,anything in the way is just that

It's a load of fun and I usually do it alone but had a ute with me for ute turkey season and took his dad and him down to the shallow area I have all to myself and while the dad just wouldn't do it like I said and was tossing a beetlespin out and getting constantly hung up his son listened to me and let me get right behind and in his ear. I showed him how to and he did exactly what I said except when I said just lift up the rod he couldn't. When massive THMP came he would FLING up in the air and back to shore the big crappie and so his dad would Ketch em! Talk about fun, wish I had a video of it as the kid was screaming out in delight and he caught his limit in just a few minutes moving about 30 feet of shoreline. I love it when I have someone to show how to fish and the kid still talks about the great weekend he had up at my place. Called in two toms up close to him but his Dad blew those for him too. Oh well.

When my sons crew came for regular turkey I brought them down and spawn still happening but only my son would listen to me and was ketchn using the Stalking Technique. Rest of his guys kept trying to cast and lost bunch of lures and gave up. All the time my son and I were ketchn our limits quickly. Some folks just refuse to learn anything new!!

Another technique which is simple is along rocky shores. At one place I fish there is a public dock which isn't very big everyone goes to fish off of and it can be good and many times it's not and it's next to a put in and then another rocky jetty on other side. several times when I went there and fishing was so so, I saw a gal fish off the jetty and ketch and real nice one in his tuxedo! well she caught that one and then left with her guy. I went over there and with my long pole just tight lined back and forth where she had been a started ketchn spawning crappie like crazy! one after another, luckily no one else was watching. went on other side of jetty and nothing. so next day went back to dock but went to the other side and did same thing with sweeping long pole and tight line back and forth and started ketchn like crazy again! there was a couple of bushes right in corner of shore there and I went there and dropped line into edge of brush and BOOM it was on! then on other side between the two bushes out in a foot of water and Boom! Now I go back there every year and if there is water there ALWAYS ketch em during spawn and no one else fishes it. so I keep it on the down low and keep doing it. All of my best spawning places are right out there where everyone can access them and everyone has to drive past one of them while going to this lake and yet NO ONE else ever fishes these great places. So if you think out of the box even right out in open, you can really dive into some great fishing.
