If you clean your daily catch near the water, throw the male and female parts out where you were fishing. That scent brings in fish also.

Funny you mention this. I had 4-5 Crappie in a fish basket hanging on side of floating dock. When I got back to dock that evening from fishing other areas I could see on livescope a bunch of Crappie in the area of the basket. Caught another 12 right there.
I'm a believer!

Otters are fast and are good fish thieves - interesting story.
crappie are for the most part highly gregarious and want to be with their brethren . scent plays such an important role with them and i am quite sure they can track each other and or locate each other sniffing the water .

Scent plays a larger part of a fishes daily life than l knew and possibly some of the rest of the members here. Fish do rely on visual a lot but I’ve caught more the last couple of years using scent than not using it. On my long lining set I usually do half the set with scent and half without. The scented jigs out catch the unscented 2 -1. I don’t put scent on all of them just in case the scent doesn’t work. In murky waters I will use scent on all jigs. Scent may also be the reason minnow tipped jigs work better than just jigs alone on some days.
because the white crappie are Mississippi river drainage oxbow natives and evolved to survive in water that most folks wouldn't even wade in they are really good at finding each other and food sources in waters with little to no visibility .
lateral lines and noses are quite often in use more than one can imagine and in the end I rarely pitch much that isn't scented .
some of the best white crappie fisheries in the world are really really turbid and quite often pretty shallow for the most part .
I would caution those that think scent does not matter with what they touch to a bait before they dip it .
