    Default Life jackets

I have been told that inflatable jackets should not be used in cold water. Use a standard life jacket instead until the water warms. Anybody have thoughts around this?

That is correct. The label on the lifejacket states this.

I duck hunt a lot, and have to remind guys of this issue often when they bring along an auto-inflate jacket and it's below 32 degrees.

My daughter bought me a regular LCD vest for Christmas because she didn't trust the A\M vest in cold water. That was good enough for me to wear the regular one. That got me thinking she is right.

The foam jackets also offer a wind break that the inflatable doesn't. Helps me in cold weather.

I like the Onyx Float Coat in winter, I wear it duck hunting as well as fishing. My only gripe about it is that it doesn't have an oversized hood for when it's rainy or windy.

Why do they make them with long sleeves? And how cold is cold?

My auto-PFD (Mustang Survival Elite 28) is super-comfortable, and has the hydrostatic valve system. Rain won't trigger it, and will inflate just fine in cold water. It also has a manual "rip cord" and a mouth tube to inflate manually if needed. Do your own research and wear what you like - but wear something, even if you are an ex-lifeguard Red Cross WSI swimmer like me.

For me, 45° with any wind is cold.

I wasn't really asking for anybody's permission. Just trying to have a boring winter conversation. I have both types and wear them according to which fits the situation.

I'm not sure why you quoted me, my post was for the OP. Like I said: wear what you like - but wear something. You have an issue with that?
