The Trion 06 is the specific reel I'm looking for. Thanks for the info.

What are the benefits of having an underspin reel for a non-beginner?

IMO, underspins have much less line problems. I like the medium sized ones. Cons; They generally won't cast as far as an open faced spinning reel. In my experience, the "micro" underspins don't last very long, usually the worm gear wears out.
Thanks Concrete Slab thanked you for this post

I forgot the most important thing; The gear ratio is generally lower, it takes in line slower.

never quite understood the need for a closed face reel to be upside down myself .
but then again there are tons of things I never quite understood that go along side that too .
if I might be so bold to ask is it so you don't look like the guy on the Hartford commercial ?
    inquiring minds thing ....

Ketchn, I can think of one benefit (and it is the reason that I own one). With a long rod that has the reel seat at the butt (same style as a fly rod), having an underspin makes the rod balance nicely in your hand. You could do that with a spinning reel, but a Zebco underspin just has a better feel to me in that one situation - especially when you can use your pinky finger to unlock the spool.

I've always thought that having a closed face reel on the down side made it less likely for you to cast the whole rod/reel out into the water, than when using such a reel on the up side. Reason being, topside reel is engaged with your thumb and when you remove your thumb from the button you're temporarily holding the rod handle with your fingers and a semi-open hand. With a bottom side reel you engage the reel with your index finger, while the other three fingers and your thumb are securely wrapped around the rod handle.

Just thinking more of the younger angler or novice angler that's just starting to learn how to cast ... and may not have the grip of an older person or an understanding of the fundamentals. Might even be a little of my early childhood experiences, and others experiences in the early stages of the learning curve. Remembering .... little hands and the "big" closed face topside reels.

I don’t understand them either. But the best fisherman I’ve ever been with or know, that’s all he uses. Doesn’t own a spinning reel.
