Default casting platform on the 16's

i am in the market for a 16ft mod v aluminum boat, i see there are quite a few to choose from, the pics say a little, but maybe someone who has been around most of them, which would have the largest casting platform, some are very narrow and short, will be looking at a crestliner 1648m next week.

Not really sure who has the largest. I fished in a couple of them. I currently have a 1648 war Eagle boat and have no problems.

Look at the 1756 and the 1860.
Can’t go wrong with a Crestliner.
Those two sizes won’t be much more than a 1648.

    hello Chuck

i would love to get the 1756, but will be towing with a 2018 Subaru Outback not sure the car will handle it, and most places i like to fish here in PA have a 10hp max. i don't think a 9.9 on the 17 will get me up on plane

ps a dealer in my area has a 1648M crestliner for 2950 but that platform is small and there is no flat floor

    Chet,
Didn’t realize you were pulling with smaller vehicle.
I take it the 1648 is bare bones with no floor with exposed ribs.
You can deal with exposed walls but I always had a floor in my boats.
I have owned several Crestliner boats but all have had floors.
Adding a floor will also add weight.
You might try Alweld boats or Sea Arc.
Both good boats but I prefer Alweld
My last one was 24 ft but sold it a few years ago to downsize.
Try Alwelds 1648 and see what the front deck size is.
Let me know what you decide.
    Thanks
    Chuck.

    hi chuck
i was over on the allweld page, i really like the 1652 marsh tiller v model, after reading more on the allweld boats, some are saying they are using wood in the transom, is that a poor choice over an all aluminum transom.

I would be interested in knowing what the weight difference is between the 17 and the 16. I now have my second 16’ Jon. That first one had a sheet metal floor that couldn’t have weighed much. My current one has a 3/4” plywood floor that has significant weight and I wouldn’t recommend it. Very heavy. Kicking the idea of a metal floor like the first one had. Also going to put some closed cell foam under that floor for flotation and to quiet the boat some. That weighs basically nothing and comes in at under $100, the metal for the floor not priced yet.

I think you’re on the right track for the boat. Don’t be put off by the exposed floor, putting in a floor isn’t too big an undertaking and wouldn’t add very much weight. Good luck and keep us posted, I’m interested in what you decide. If you watch Richard Genes videos you’ll notice the front deck extension he had done. Made out of aluminum and storage underneath it also seems to be pretty light.

If you call Alweld they will custom make your deck to whatever size you want.
My custom 2472 was done by them to my specs.

If you want to make your own, search this site, tinboats.net , and youtube. Type in something like, boat front deck extension. Tinyboatnation, on youtube has some good ideas, as well as several others.
My last boat, I extended the front deck, it wasn't a tough project. I would suggest pricing metal from your local metal supplier, or weld and fabrication shop. Buying metal from the big box stores will run you broke. For your fasteners, look online, places such as Fastenal.
Unless you know exactly what you want, I recommend fishing out of it for a year, and watch fishing videos!
Seriously though, this will give you ideas.
