    Default reel type??

Kind of a newbie here. The few times I've targeted crappie I just use my smallmouth spinning gear. Do any of you use underspins or push button reels?

I think you'll find a wide variety of usage here. I would think that spinning reels would get the most votes but lots of the spider riggers use a mini bait caster type reel. I recently put the under-mount version of the zebco push button on one of my 10' rods but I haven't had a chance to use it yet.

Since I don't cast but flip or drop a bait on Crappie I just use old baitcaster reel . If I was going to cast it would be open faced spinning reel .

Ultralight spinning reel with 5-10' rod depending on style of fishing I'm doing.

Nothing wrong with that. Light or UL spinning tackle is perfect for crappie.

I do not use push button or underspin reels. I use ultralight (10 or 1000 size) or light (25 or 2500 size) reel when fishing for crappie because where I fish there is always a chance to hook a walleye, smallmouth, largemouth, or channel catfish.

All I have are level wind bait caster's and spinning reel's. Used to fish for trout so light weight reels turn me on. In fact my favorite is UL spinning reels. Crappie just aren't that big around here and it just doesn't take much of a rod and reel to catch them. Have two ultra light's and several light trout rods I use. Normally I use the ultra light's and the trout rods are loaners!

I have tried using my level winds but the jig's I use are way to light. Probably a spin cast might work, never had much use for one myself. Will they cast a 1.16th oz jig? If so and you like spin cast, your good to go.

Most small spincast reels will easily handle 1/16 oz jigs with the right rod and line. I have one rigged for my wife or grandkids with 4 lb line on a very light baitcast rod and it will cast a 1/32 a mile. That same rod has caught double digit catfish and handled them very well. They usually come with stiff, heavy line tho'.

as i've gotten older i have become a fan of spincast reels my favorite is the Zebco 33 micro and now the Lew's speedcast i like how they both fit in the palm of my hands . as for the underspin i have several and don't like casting with them and prefer grabbing one of my spinning reels . as for baitcasters love hate relationship i will take one fishing and be casting along thinking i got the hang of this and boom bird nest and i know practice practice practice and this is why i love my spincast button,
