Default New mind sets on Crappie fishing .

I been saying presentation matters most , colors no so important as Crappie will hit bare leadhead . Colors more to catch fishermen . Never liked small baits my self . When I was swinging my fish with no net lots of people told me you can't do that here our fish too big . Now I see everyone jumping on board like it is all something new last couple years .

Colors matter with presentation, same presentation different color no fish seen it too many times to think color doesnt matter.. now do I think we need as many color combos as there are out there ,nope.. nor do I think we need 100 diff calibers to hunt a 200# whitetail deer but variety makes it interesting.

I sling pretty large crappie with an ultralight and have for a good while ,momentum is everything.
Of course if you are behind me it might be a problem...
Bait size is something that has always bewildered me , the big tournament that was won recently neither of them used a big bait .
Do big baits equal big crappie, not always best I can tell you.

I have caught 16 inch crappie using a 1/64 oz jig. I caught an 8 lb bass with a 1/64oz jig last year. My preference is small jigs with small bodies. I don't think color matters as much as a contrast in color. My preferred colors are black/chartreuse and blue/green such as Pepop's Blue Truse with silver or gold flash in the tail.

I also sling big fish into my pontoon but I cry every time I lost one doing this. It would seem as if I would learn to use a net on big fish but I tell myself it is too hard to have the rod in one hand and the net in the other and land the fish. But the truth is I'm probably just too lazy to make the effort.

I think bait size has a lot to do with fall rate and action, so it’s part of presentation.

Biggest crappie I ever saw caught was on a deep diving crank bait. Biggest I’ve ever caught was on a 1/32 jig under a Thill bobber. I tried split shot up the line to get it down to the fish faster and they ignored it.

If I live long enough, someday I might start trying to throw what the fish want how they want it instead of trying to get them to bite what I want to fish the way I want to fish it.

I find painted jig heads do make a difference in cold water. Once the water temp gets above low 60's I switch to unpainted jigs......Most of the time. There are still some days with cloudy conditions where a painted head will produce better

This year I've gone totally toward using nail polish. Stuff dries quickly and is very hard. Wife provided a couple colors that change in differing light conditions. One starts of a glossy light green. I believe it might change to a shade of glossy blue. The other is a glossy white. Don't really know what color that may change to

Just remember all the guys telling me I should change. Bet I got tackle older than 1/2 the fishermen now . No bragging just what I believe . Most bait makers have created the belief you must have a zillion baits in a rainbow of colors . Remember that is how they make a living . Can't sell enough baits with one color .

My thoughts run like this " if you are satisfied with your method , Why care what other people do ? "
I do not care if you use big or small , light or dark , plastic or hand tied , live bait or artificial. Now , if we are fishing
together and you are catching more that me , I am not to proud to copy what you are doing.

    good luck to us all
