Default Maybe You Know The Secrets I Seeketh

It’s cold out there, so maybe you have a little time for me.

I plan to push and pull. Later I will learn to jig single rods. I have decided that four rods would be the most I would want to manage. Not sure that they make rods that do both styles of fishing well enough.

    For pushing:
It seems that the idea is to add as small a sinker as possible and move slowly and detect any anomalies. Some rods can do this with 1/2 ounce, some two ounces. Assuming that the fish takes my jig, is this difference in weight a big deal ?

!6 foot rods present jigs two feet earlier than 14 foot rods. Is this enough of an advantage to want the longer rods ?

I will be fishing alone most times, and netting fish is probably not going to happen. So for lifting fish into the boat, should I favor backbone over sensitivity ?

I may need to add more weight to increase speed or deal with conditions, and are rods very sensitive to me adding say a two ounce sinker when most use 1/2 ounce ?

I see the rod makers offer replacement tips. What are the most common ways these rods get broken ?

    Pulling:

I have rod holders that will allow five rods out the back. Two straight out the sides, two at half angle and one straight back. I imagine any length of rod would suffice, but what considerations should be taken into account ?

Can I use my pushing rods for pulling, or will I be buying a set just for this purpose ?

So right now I am thinking that stiffer will be better for me and am looking at the Southern Crappie regular and the heavy T version. From B&M the Trolling Heavy version, the regular trolling and the Coleman & Copes. Want to keep cost to about $350 or below until later when I will know exactly what I want.

I have a new boat and have been rigging up rod holders. Bought four, mounted them, unmounted them, put in box in garage. Next up was six holders which will be mounted to the stainless bars on my center console seat. Mounting to the aluminum floor using screws is not for me ever again. Too loose and gets worse as you adjust them. I really like the stainless cup style mounted to the seat. Rock solid for trolling for large species as well. Have some Elite rod holders on their way, for up front. but the postman has them and I think he is fondling them. My plan is to attach a heavy plastic to the floor and screw them into that. These will adjust to fit me as I sit in my perch.

Spring will be here before we realize, and I know it is alot to ask someone to recommend rods to total strangers, but I really need to understand the concepts. What the rods can and cannot do and I will figure my way through. Of course there is the forum search function but I am no closer to understanding after accessing it. The makers do not list much information either and seem to expect people to already know what they need.

BTW...my Crappie sauces arrived in fine fashion- thanks.

I normally just longline when trolling. I have three rods off each side of the front of boat. A twelve foot rod, a ten foot rod and a eight foot rod. That’s all the rods I use when by myself. If someone is with me I have another six rods for the back of the boat. I set all rods up with the same line I just use one jig per line to keep tangles to a minimum.
I don’t push myself. If I need to go that slow I’ll just add a cork to my LL poles and adjust for depth as needed.

Thanks but Search doesn't help. Thought asking would be acceptable. Are there other subjects we are not supposed to ask about ?

Ask about anything fishing related, nothing's off limits ... S10chevy was just providing you an alternative to waiting on members to reply to your specific questions.

    OK....

Here are some pictures of my boat’s rod holders for pulling baits. I will of course pull jigs for crappie but also larger baits for larger fish. My favorite is large shiners
    for bass.

if you aint holding the rod i would tend to think sensitivity is a non issue ?
i would opt for backbone if i thought the fish might be in the over 2 lbs range
and i would also tend to think if your are moving when a crappie hits a bait it should be pretty obvious you got a take
    my 2 cents

    Wow
    Nice rig
The rocket launchers look good and are positioned well.
    Should work nice.

Real nice looking rig you got there.

I don't have many suggestions on rod length or action to offer because most of my fishing is done from a kayak. Medium action 6'6" - 7' are my standard rod lengths for pulling cranks. I usually only pull two - three rods at a time.

Gotta say that I'm not sure I'd fish much without a net, unless you're o.k. with losing some fish. Landing crappie without a net is quite doable, but risky. In my experience it seems bigger fish are pretty talented at spitting the hook right at the boat. Losing an average size fish is no big deal & expected from time to time, though I still have nightmares over monster slabs coming unbuttoned right close to the boat. So far, a 2 pound 12 oz. white crappie is my PB, but I know I lost a few bigger than that, which would have been easy pickins with a landing net.
*just trying to help prevent recurring nightmares is all*

Good luck with whatever rods you choose. Have fun & good fishing!

    Jim
