    Default Black nose crappie question.

Are the stripes on black nose crappie on when they hatch out or do the stripes come on at a certain age. Reason for asking I have never caught one under 10 inches that have a stripe and I have caught several of them over the years but have never seen a young one with the stripe.

It took years for the black nose crappie that were stocked illegally in Williamsport Lakes to get to ten inches. I use to spend many days out there catching them almost on every cast in the spring.....from 5 inches up to 9 inches. Also used to catch tons of juvenile black nose crappie under the fishing pier below Nickajack Dam in the 7-9 inch range.

    Regards

I’m blessed to fish waters that big black nose are plentiful. The table has a few white crappie but rest are black nose. The crappie I am holding was one of 30 my nephew and I caught a while back. The smallest crappie that day was 14 inches with most being 15 and a couple at 16 inches.

    Regards

They are born with the black stripe. They can & will pass that stripe on to other Crappie (non-Blacknose) should crossbreeding occur.

There's still a debate on whether the stripe is the result of a recessive gene or dominant gene ... because of their ability to pass that stripe on to regular Black Crappie and/or White Crappie, should that crossbreeding occur.

A Black Crappie & a White Crappie can (& do) crossbreed, resulting in a Hybrid Crappie : (spine count of a Black Crappie, but a mixing of the spots/stripes side coloration pattern) But, they will not have a black stripe down their backs.

But when a Blacknose Black Crappie & a regular Black Crappie crossbreed, the fry are most likely to be born with the stripe ... as are the fry of White Crappie that happen to crossbreed with a Blacknose Black Crappie. Thus the debate about whether or not the stripe is caused by a dominant or recessive gene.

I have seen them at 4 inches long with stripes and as large as 16 inches with stripes .
they seem really aggressive to me and that in turn might be why in lots of spots large ones are uncommon .
one spot i like has tons of little ones in it and you rarely see a keeper .
in some other spots not near as many and some are larger specimens .
i do know the really small under 4 inch ones has very faint stripes in most cases

That's what I was wondering if the strips were visual at the time of birth. I have never caught a real small one.
