Sounds like a fun adventure. Always hear about the bass, not usually much about the crappie. Looks like y'all did a great job locating them and catching some nice ones!

Like you, I don't ever fish much in deep water. In fact, I describe 15 feet as deep and rarely go deeper - couldn't in most lakes I fish anyway. Some day soon I plan to get the boat in working order and then maybe I'll be dredging some up at Pickwick.

It's amazing how big a bait a crappie can get in their mouth. I was fishing for smallmouth with a 1/4 jig , 2/0 hook and 4" grub and felt a tap, tap and set the hook in a 9" crappie. I was amazed that it got enough of that bait in it's mouth to get hooked. Another time a 12 incher committed suicide by swallowing a #7 shad rap so deep that I couldn't even see the bill on the crankbait as I was reeling it in.

i have seen some large baits in the throats of crappie before .
1 guy i know caught a big crappie with a yellow bass in its stomach

i was amazed a black crappie in the 12 to 13 inch range would try to swallow a 3.125 inch bait like they did ....
and i mean hit it like a train ....

I see 11" crappie take those 3" baits DEEP often.... I've been dropping from the 1.3" tad fry to that big 3" bait from Limits Tackle lately and if they don't hit that big'un they'll for sure hit that lil'un......
