When direct jigging using the down mode I prefer 6 ft rods. If I am using forward mode I use a 10 ft rod. I've had to use 12 ft rods the last two months as someone stole the 10 ft rods from my boat. I find the longer rods too heavy for fishing all day and are only good for spider rigging. Others will probably disagree but at my age, the weight of the rod is more important to me than brand names.

I am waiting on clearance sales to replace the stolen 10 ft rods. I don't like paying the inflated prices of fishing gear and try to do my buying when the stores are having inventory clearance sales during January and February.

    Default Advice for livescope rod

Really has nothing to do with brand names. It’s about finding a rod that works for you. I have a ton of light rods in the garage gathering dust and several more that I have sold on here because they don’t serve the function I need. If I had shipping tube laying around I would send the original poster some of the light ones so he could try and find one he likes. I personally have lost so many big fish over the years fumbling or turning to grab the net and losing control of the fish that I refuse to fish with a rod that will not comfortably swing a 2.5lb fish into the boat. Between the better rods available and years of experimenting with the right jigheads/jig hooks for different size baits, I now lose a lot less fish. Folks just have to find what fits their budget and needs.

Man if you make me pick just one it would be the Huckabee Phantom 13. With the longer rod even in deeper water you can drop more times on each fish/spot as you pull up to each fish/spot if you come in at a good angle. And at the end of day that will get more big fish in the boat. But I have jig fished since way before Livescope and always preferred a 10-11ft rod so I still use the 10.5ft Huckabee Elite a lot. Especially in muddier or deeper water. Like I said earlier, a lot of nice rods these days but the Huckabee models feel more sturdy swinging bigger fish than some of the other popular models/brands mentioned, especially in the reel seat area. But best to get your hands on one to see what you think, they aren’t for everyone. I went to Grizzly Jig twice and handled about every rod in there before I came off the cash to try my first Huckabee. I now own 5 and probably add two or three more this year. I can tell you also from personal experience that Ken, the owner, will stand behind his products and take of any problems if something isn’t right. One rod I bought had a very minor flaw and I sent him pictures. He told me to keep the one that had the flaw as a back up and immediately mailed a new rod to replace it. And no I am not sponsored in any way. Just one crappie gear junkies experience.

I have a couple of B'n'M sticks that are great rods. Now they have the Super Stick, which I may pick up soon.

I recently purchased the Huckabee Phantom 13' and Bone Stix 13' rods, and I'm putting Daiwa Tatula Left Handed Flipping Baitcasters on them. Probably complete overkill, but it should work fantastic.

Part of the fun is trying out different equipment and finding what works best for you.
