Default Brutal trek to IL. First time on Lake of Egypt with 3 Pound Fishing.

Jere and I took the day to run up I-24 to Southern Illinois to Lake of Egypt. Matt of 3 Pound Fishing guides there and has a rental house on the water. We met at his dock at 7 with the flags looking starched and stiff.

We had hauled all the winter clothes we had (that fit). I had forgotten how the cold was since I quit snow goose guiding about 6 years ago. My tired old bones ached before we got out of the bay.

My reason for booking the trip was to pick Matt's brain about Livescoping for suspended fish and his techniques for keeping in contact with small schools that were pretty scattered.. Catching a bunch was way down the list of things I wanted to take care of.

Long story short: Jere and Matt proceeded to kick me in my shorts. I cant say I missed many fish that I felt. With hard wind blowing my slack line on the spinning reel everywhere, I was spending more time addressing loops in lose line than I would have liked to. Jere kept up pretty good but Matt put on a clinic. We left with heads full of new ideas and a cooler full of nice black crappie.

If you get a chance, check out Matt's extensive video series on YouTube--3 Pound Fishing.

BTW, no freebies here. Normal guide rate was well worth it.

Jere and I have faces made for radio PLUS the wind would have made recording sound impossible.

Matt is top notch. He knows his stuff and his videos are very educational (even if he does fish barefooted much of the time). Not today of course!

It was in low 40s tops. I took my rabbit fur Bomber hat for pics. That thing is great but I can't hear a thing when I wear it.
