Up here in the Nort country Whites are more open basin suspended where Blacks like to hang around some type of cover, depending on lake Blacks may be shallower or deeper then Whites but some type of close cover seems to be key.

i would tend to agree on this part of the subject as well, black crappie in these parts are rare in open water conditions .
cover is their thing most of the time .they seem to be pretty tight to it most spots i hit .

One of my lakes I fish is mostly black crappie so they are everywhere but on my other lake that we had the tourneys on I use to target the black crappie since they usually hold more weight here than the white crappie but the past couple years the black crappie have almost disappeared on this lake..... It's rare to catch a tourney quality black crappie......
They've been hiding from me purdy good.....I say this to get the point over that lake are different and the fish have years that are really good and then years that are not.....

Pulled in well over 100 in the last week in a few hour long sessions from the bank. Landed more big ones than any other time of the year. The cold weather has been excellent for crappie fishing!

they are in ridiculous numbers in the creek i hit the last 2 days along with about the same amount of whites ,about a 50 50 mix .
but so are about every kind of fish right now in that area . clouds of 2 inch shad are up in there and EVERY darn fish in the lake has followed them up in there .
average depth of around 5 foot of water .miles and miles of creek flat full of them and other fish right beside em .

Here I thought it was some kind of flying fish, trying to get out of his way. We all know that Ketchn has a reputation, and the fish know too. No thank you, cold water and a yak.
