Do jighead colors really matter?

I paint my own. For a long time I used unpainted heads. I did a little self study and documented my experiments. I now pour and paint my own heads and there's good reason for them being painted. Each person has their own opinions, but it is hard to dispute facts. That's just my thoughts.

IMO in very stained water it doesn't matter much but in clearer it could. the spider rig guys with so many lines in water should have more of an idea. I have both in my box and when the bite is good matters not at all but when not? I change it up and try chartreuse, white, pink and black whenever I ketch them on sale. few years back my buddy barry painted a bunch of my lead heads for me and still have them to use.

Again it's what you have confidence in and ketchn reinforces your prejudice one way or the other. As someone said it's more about ketchn the fisherman to buy than actual results. is why we buy so many many different colors of jigs and then use about 3 all the time!! LOL

how do you decide which color to use? Can you just paint normal unpainted jigheads? and finally is it cheaper to pour your own ?

I don't spider rig, but I do usually fish in pretty clear water. just not sure if it is worth the money for all the differnt jighead colors yk?

More specific question: how important is it to have an eyeball painted on that jighead? I have been averse to jigheads without eyeballs, but not sure why!

Also depends on what type of fishing you do. I am going to be pulling jigs or crankbaits out the back of the boat. Jig head color may make a difference if the jig is sitting still in front of the crappie for 2 minutes, but I don't see it making a lot of difference when I pull the jig by him at 1 mph. I buy what ever I can find on sale. Usually painted if there is not much difference in price, but I do not care what color.

I normally start with chartreuse and work my way around. The thing about a painted jig head is that you are adding an additional color to your spectrum. In other words, if you are using chartreuse and black jig body and you add an orange head, the fish now has 3 colors to see. One of those may be the color that entices a strike. Does the colored head hurt? no Can it help? possibly.

As far as painting heads, yes, you can buy unpainted and then paint them. I buy jig hooks for $35/1000 and pour my own jigs but I go through 500-700 jigs per year. It's much cheaper for me to make my own and I can custom color some heads. I can add a little stripe, whatever I want. To each his own, but I'll take any advantage I can get.

I use unpainted heads predominantly. Once in a while I’ll give painted heads a go. They may catch a few but 95% of the time, unpainted will outfish them with the same color body on them.

I feel the same way!

Usually in the Spring I'll use white road runner heads with curly tail grubs in off color water but normally unpainted Jigheads will catch any crappie!
