Try switching to braid. I won't go back to mono.

Otherwise try soaking your entire new line in water for a day before you spool it up. Or as another mentioned at the lake cast it out and use your troller to unspool the entire reel and then reel in the wet line.

That was me, Chet .... I use that method to remove the coils set in the line when the reel hasn't been used for awhile. And when you cut the line loose from the secured object, walk back to the reel and reel the line back thru the grass while applying moderate finger/thumb pressure to the line as it goes on the reel. That takes any twist out of the line and packs the line tight on your reel spool, which helps stop any loops or loose coils from getting overwrapped (another factor in kinked line and "birdnests" during a cast).

I've also used the free line dragged behind a boat at idle speed method to take twist out of the line. (NOTE : it don't take all that long of casting a light jig to impart quite a bit of twist to your line, reason being that the jig will sometimes spin when you cast it - especially if you use a wrist snap action when casting. )

I use a lot of fluorocarbon line on my reels and it can be aggravating with line memory. Here’s a couple things I do that seem to work for me.
Install line on reel from spool in same direction. If line looks twisted coming off spool, flip it over.
Don’t feel the spool all the way to the edge. I personally stop at 50% capacity.
I run the new spool of line under hot water a couple of times and spray the spool and line with a line conditioner such as reel magic.
Over time, you will get line twist from the motion when reeling in.
You can spool out the line with no weight behind the boat while idling to remove
Every reel has different characteristics but you’ll find what it likes.
    Good luck and tightlines!

This is true. I had one case for whatever reason with Stren Crappie where I had to flip the spool label down to get the line coming off in the same direction as the bail turn. Normally label up always works. The reel was the same as before so it was the way the line was spooled at the factory(?) You have to check, and not filling up the whole reel spool is important as well.

Nice video, Elmo and all LOL. But I use a cheap line spooler, the plastic box with holes in the bottom for the line to come out. Keep a lot of tension even if I have to add cardboard pieces to "shim" the spools in the box to keep them tight against each other. I have no idea as to the manufacturer's process of applying the label so I just go with clockwise facing me. I don't think clockwise is critical but the tension is.

Spool the line on the reel with tension and don't overfill. Works for me. As fishermen/women we tend to over think stuff.

Thank you Bill Bob and all the veterans . Your service is appreciated.

I always put it on wrong. I've got skills. I can use identical reels and spool one with label up and one with label down, leave 1/8" of spool showing, close the bail by hand etc. And BOTH of mine will be wrong. Been doing it this way for years.

Truthfully, I do get it wrong a lot. But it does get worse when casting a lot. Every so often, stop casting. Let the jig hang in the air and watch it spin.......trying to unwind itself. Allow it to untwist, then open the bail and let the jig go to the bottom. Wind up again and see if jig still wants to spin.

You should be getting at least 40-45' with mono and almost any decent light/UL outfit. Something's wrong with your set up -- not sure if it's the rod, reel, line or a combination of all three.

Maybe the rod's too stiff, the spool on the reel is too small, etc.
