Default what am i doing wrong

we went out fishing today, there was a boat with father and 2 8 or 10 yr olds with him, when we got to the area where they were, they were catching crappie on every other cast, i noticed he was constantly moving, and i noticed he was was looking at probably some kind of fishfinder, we caught about 5 in the area where he was and they probably caught 50 all released, they went in to shore for an hour or so, so i went over where they were, we could not catch nothing, so they come back and we moved away from their spot, they get there and started catching fish after fish. i am so puzzled, i did ask if they were using artificial s and said yes. i noticed they were not casting out at all, seems like they were vertical jigging. i tried that too no luck, what in the world are we doing wrong. we were fishing in 10 to 20 ft of water, when i got into shore there were a few shore guys fishing and said they were there the day before and was doing the same thing

Are you watching your line, or waiting to feel a bite? It took me a long while to get it into my head even after being told multiple times, but if you wait to feel a crappie bite, you've missed most of them. Also could be a jig head weight thing, or a jig size thing. Yesterday I could only catch them on 1 1/4" baits. They wouldn't hit a 2" bait. The day before in the same spot, they'd eat anything you put in front of them.

They're crappie, they're finicky and I hate them, but I love them. LOL

Yep this sums it up. There are very few crappie guides for the reason you pointed out. Most novice fisherman don't have the to touch. I'm not saying OP doesn't.

Are you using scent or nibbles? Tried different size and colors? Hair jigs instead of plastics? Impossible to answer your question. I have no shame in trying to figure out what works for successful fisherman so ask questions until they stop answering them!

Chet....what Furflying said is all true. Just when you think you have it figured out you really don't. It's hard to pinpoint exactly but there is a reason. I say buy a fish finder and then throw the whole tackle box at them. : ) P.S. Remember to fish slowly and read and watch everything you can about crappie fishing. You'll eventually get into them like there's no tommorow an then live and breathe CRAPPIE FISHING....😉

Livescope helps a whole bunch and helped me yesterday to see that fish were spooked by my 2" BGBS jigs. They'd swim up to them, then quickly swim away like they were spooked. I told my son we were going to tie on the smallest things we had in the boat. We started catching fish then, but still missed 3 times more than we caught. They'd suck in and spit out the bait so fast you could barely tell there were two thumps. I could watch them bite it on LS and still rarely catch one.

Is there a way you can record that from LS. I would love to see that. How far are they taking it in from? I remember hearing a big bass can draw one in from 15 inches.

There probably is a way, but I'd have no clue how to do it. Yesterday they were getting close before biting. As in I mean swim up very slowly and get close enough that I couldn't see my jig any longer. They might swim up from 2-3 feet away, then they'd just sit there after we swapped to the smaller lures. The bigger lures they'd swim up, then swim off like they were spooked. Extremely fast. With the small jig, the fish would sit there anywhere from 10-30 seconds and i'd feel a thumpthump. Not thump thump. If there had been a space between the thumps I could have caught them. They were sucking it in (first thump) and spitting it out (2nd thump) faster than I could react and I was anticipating having to react because I could see them at my jig. The fish we caught on the smaller jigs were just barely hooked too. They were definitely not inhaling it.

Lure size and action most of the time require certain jig head weights and hook sizes. Some times bigger is better but not much bigger.
Last week I decided to get away from using round body grubs and started catching some nice crappie and perch on flat sided bodies with straight tails. The dimension of the lure looking at it from the side was wider offering more of a target/challenge and so even light strikes were detected and hook-ups pretty easy. Of course 4# test diameter braid is the only line I use which allowed the above.

Depth is key especially in 40-50 degree water which I imagine is similar in Pa. to what I'm fishing in NY. Numbers don't make my day as much as discovering where fish are biting which precedes numbers caught and what different lures I caught fish on (which came down to a chosen three). Depth fish are biting and how close to the bottom, surface or mid-depth is part of the pattern. In one lake the best bite was jigging lures off bottom in 5' close to weed edges; in another lake the fish were suspended in water 4-5' mid-depth. Sonar is a must for me !

Morning or afternoon can also make a difference and the window may be from 10am - 3pm in the fall.

Variables make fishing the challenge it is and sometimes it takes a while to discover which to choose that result in higher fish concentrations and strikes.

With crappie it's sometimes a area as small as a hubcap that they will hit a bait..... Being close to someone catching is just not gonna cut most of the time...... Target specific..... location location location......
