Elwood "Buck" Perry once said (back in the 60's) that everything you use in fishing should be selected upon achieving two objectives. Depth & speed control. This is absolutely correct IF you are fishing open water. Brush, weeds, trees all can pose challenges for sure. A lot depends upon the "way" you fish (casting, jigging, trolling, etc..) and the type of water you are fishing (clear, stained, muddy). No one can say just what is right for you without much more information.
However, I like the "rope" answer!

Personally, I like 6# test mono as an all around average line size/strength for Crappie fishing. I use it for most all of my casting methods, and leader lines for my trolling methods (specifically Pushing).
I use 6# mostly. Good mono and a leader.
Depending on what I'm doing I use 2-8# with 6# being my standard.
