I have found using Livescope that if you make a sudden large movement with the jig the crappie will scatter. But if you then hold it still many of them will come back for a second look. I have also found that if the crappie look the jig over and then start to swim away they will come back to have a second look at it if you do a hard jerk up and down with the jig.
I haven't fished this past week due to weather but the previous week I found when fishing the docks they wanted it swimming toward them and would then hit the jig as you started lifting up. Most of my success was when I pitched the jig out about 20 foot and let it swing back in toward me. They would then hit it as I started to raise the jig at the end of the swing.
But I also found when I was fishing the brush piles they wanted it slowly swiming just above them. They would not hit if with straight jiging but would hit it if you made the jig swim in a slow circle just above them.
And yes, I know I am somewhat a fair weather fisherman these days. I don't mind cold weather as I can dress for it but when you combine cold weather, rain and wind, then my crappie fishing will be limited to watching SK and a couple of other local anglers on youtube.
