I've been using the diawa regal lt reels (1000 & 2000). The deep spools don't bother me in the least. I put mono backer in them & then fill the rest with braid. I filled both reels with diawa 8x 8# j-braid. By using the backer I'm able to spool both reels with 1 300m spool of line. Without the backer the 2000 reel would of took 260m of the same line.

Pflueger makes a reel called an Arbor. It has a wider shallower spool than the President. This is what I use for dock shooting. It comes with two spools. Same smooth bearings.

If you're willing to go Chinese. the Piscifun Carbon-X is light and you can get a shallow spool in the 1000, 2000 and 3000 sizes.

as for piscifun i do like the carbon x specs, but have a bit of a sour taste with piscifun 4 months ago, i purchased the new phantom bait caster after3 weeks it started making a weird sound and was getting backlashes galore, took the side off and found the centrifugal weight disc came loose on the spool, i contacted customer service, they wanted to see a pic, i sent them a pic of the split part, been getting the run around for the last 7 or 8 weeks, they said they shipped a new replacement spool, after a month i contact them again and they said they will ship for sure this time, it been almost another month and nothing, getting a runaround with their customer service, must have been a lemon, wish somehow i could get my money back, but SOL

I hear ya. I've been using two Carbon-X 1000s, one with the shallow spool, and they've worked perfectly. I ordered a 2000 in late February and still have not received it.
