spinning reel mod

curious if anyone other than my wife might be having this issue, i have her switching from spincast reels to new spinning reels and rods, she tells me that the reel seems to be a bit to far from the rod, i know there are not reels where the bail is closer to the rod, she has short fingers and i am thinking if i can cut the stem and cut a little out and either have it welded or maybe jb weld, any other solutions before i hack one of these reels and see what happens. she is getting by at the moment, but i would like to make her a little happier

What size reel are you using? A 500 or 750 reel is much smaller and closer than a 3000 or 4000 sized reel.

Also I bet she has her rod hand below the reel stem, have her move her hand above, this places the reel closer to her hand too.

I definitely wouldn’t cut the reels in any way, shape or form. I don’t believe they would weld back together well and it would void any warranty. There are some very small spinning reels out there. I have two Pflueger President 25’s that are small. The smallest I own is a Quantum but I can’t tell you the model. My suggestion is to take your wife to some different retailers and search until you find some that are comfortable to her.

Generally spinning reel bodies and stems are either die cast zinc alloy or aluminum alloy. It isn't likely you could weld or braze either strongly enough to hold. Also when the line peels off it spins outwards wider than the spool diameter by a large amount, depending on the weight and stiffness of the line. If the line slaps the rod, casting range will be reduced. Reel designers don't set a reel out as far as they do for no reason. After all it takes more material, requires bigger packaging, and is, as your wife finds, less wieldy and comfortable. But frankly the extension is necessary.

I went the opposite route my wife was trying to learn spinning reels and wasn’t happy so we went back to traditional spin cast for her for bluegill fishing. She will use a spinning reel with a jig pole when we’re LiveScope fishing or spider rigging.

my wife loves her push buttons , she has a real nice open faced she never uses .
some of the pushbuttons we own i even use in a pinch .
and they will cast a blooming mile if kept clean and full of light line .
