When I lived in Texas I carried a roll of Duck Tape, and taped an end of my mooring rope to the piling. Then used the TM to circle the piling and grab the end of the rope. Some of the pilings were much bigger than a Hula Hoop.

That seems like the smartest idea and would take up less space in boat.

I take one of my fishing bouys tie my rope to it throw it upstream and wait for it on the other side. Grab it with my docking hook. I fish watershed so current is always happening.

I do know one thing , watching some guy like me or the next guy fighting the summer recreation folks wakes and the wind white capping water up under a bridge trying to tie up can be super entertaining....

I have been using one made from a hoola hoop. Problem with it was it was not stiff enough so it was fun getting it around the column and catching the other end during rought water. Friend of mine made me one from 1/2 inch pvc pipe. He used a heat gun to shape it. Works perfect and makes it fast and easy for one person to tie up to the bridge column, even in rough water.

I would get a picture of it but right now I am staying away from the slips for a couple of weeks since a guy and his family two slips down from mine now has the virus. Fortunately i was not at the slips when he was there but I don't know who was so I've decided to stay home for the next couple of weeks.
