Default Jighead vs hook with split shot

I have not used minnows in many years but my daughter wants to try it on the next trip. I got to wondering if a minnow has reduced action on a jighead than it does on a light wire hook with split shots up the line. Seems it would change the chances of a reaction strike maybe. What do you think?

I enjoy fishing an Aberdeen with minnows and a quill and drop shot when the risk of getting hung is low. I say yeah the the minnow can swim easier. But he'll get you get you hung easier also.

In my opinion, I believe that a jig hook alters the action of a minnow, where as a hook does very little to alter the minnows movement in the water.

I've caught better with minnows on a jighead for some reason. Not sure if they're easier for crappie to eat that way or something. I'll sometimes do a double rig with a jighead on bottom and a regular hook 8-10 inches above. The jighead usually catches more fish.

Wow... I had forgot all about that magazine. I was a dedicated reader back in the day.

I too use Aberdeen hooks tied on the line with a loop knot that allows my minnow to swim freely more so than the hook just tied to the line. I am going to try the jig head idea late month on our “fishcation” to KY.

… and the late, great Charlie Brewer.

It was a great mag. There's nothing like it on the market today.

Was it really that long ago! Fishing Facts and Lunkers Love Nightcrawlers were among my first fisherman's bibles. We fished jig and minnow for all kinds of fish for years. All of Dad's generation is gone now, and I am getting old enough to not want to mess around with live bait anymore, but I still use the jigs for just about every fish target, just adjusting the size and the plastic I now use in stead of live bait.
Dad used to always have a cooler of nightcrawlers along as well. If all else failed his nightcrawlers inevitably caught something. For years he had an old refrigerator that he kept a lot of crawlers in all summer.
