Honestly, you can spend as much or as little as you want, but spending more doesn't automatically mean you will enjoy it more. This spring I caught most of my fish out of a row boat w/o using any electronics. Will a fishing boat and electronics increase your chances? Absolutely. Can simple be relaxing and enjoyable? No doubt that is true, too.

Related to costs, if fishing increases your enjoyment of life, reduces stress, and puts some healthy food on the table along the way then it is worth every penny spent and then some...

    I plead the 5th.

There have been many dinners served by means of a cane pole!

    Jim,

As the others here can attest, the sky is the limit for what you can spend getting into fishing.

My advice is to keep it simple starting out. When I was a kid, one of my favorite Christmas presents was a telescopic Zebco spinning combo that I would take to school with me in my backpack. After school, I’d walk 1/2 mile to the neighborhood pond, pinch on a piece of cheap white bread onto a small hook, and catch bream with my buddy Sam until it was time to head home for dinner. The whole set-up was probably under $40 and that kept me entertained for at least 1-2 summers.

My advice would be to pick a species that you can find locally, get the basic tackle that you need to catch it, master catching it, then move onto a new technique / species. That way, you won’t go overboard buying a bunch of stuff you don’t need and you’ll find out pretty quickly how much you really like to fish. Because if you find out that you do like it, you’ll probably need a bigger shed / garage / house within a few years How much have you spent to go fishing?

I think I caught almost as many fish, maybe just not as big, from a $200 flat bottom, $400 15hp motor single poling or trolling with cane poles that we sat on-no rod holders, as I do from a $7000 boat and about that much in gear to deck it out. Buy what you can afford and have fun fishing!

my boat was 2 years old when i bought it 14 years ago for $8100. now i have more money i electronics than the boat cost and most of the time the electronics are not turned on except the trolling motor.... buy what you want with the money you have.....Shiny and speed dont catch fish though.

I just sold a boat and bought a newer one. I'm figuring my crappie fillets this year cost me about...I don't want to think about it!

A SINGLE TRIP ....to Larsens Bay lodge on Kodiak Island to ketch numerous species of fish and they even threw in few blacktail hunts for grins was a mere 10,000 US for EACH person ,,,,,,
Of course one of my more than wealthy buddies took care of the biggest expenditures ,but to say the least that was a while back and i bet it aint got cheaper .
Costa Rica was also one of those fish ketchn costly adventures along with a few of the other off Baja and other West coast visits . Its all relative to me and in the end if you really want to do it ,you should make it a target agenda and stay after it
I wouldnt want to add up what i have spent in almost 60 years of trying to hold a fish in my hand as it would hurt my mind to think of all those greenbacks and i aint talking about bass
The one thing i do know is the cost of it all has nothing to do with the memories , i shared a cane pole with my oldest daughter in a long forgotten pond and caught dinner some 30 years ago and it was one of those truck rides we used to take for something to do because we lived in a more than remote area , that trip only cost a bit of gas and it was one of the most memorable fun trips to ketch a fish ever .
this much i do know and to be sure ,having twin sailfish on ,one in your hand and one in your buddies and having one jump high left at the EXACT same time your Vela jumps right and watching them cross in midair far out to sea is about something you will never forget . so who cares if just the boat ride cost 2,000 US that day right ?
