Certainly can't say I blame you for that. I'm originally from New England and practically lived in the woods growing up, and never herd of them until I relocated to VA. If they were there, I never heard anyone talk about them. But, boy oh boy, they sure know how to find this transplanted Yankee in a hurry down here. to the South

Didn't know about it repelling chiggers. Yes permethrin, is supposed to repel mosquitoes too. That company also has socks, that are treated also.

About 30 years ago, a guy from work went deer hunting, and then cleaned it and several other's deer also. Apparently he didn't check himself for ticks after. He got lime disease, and just couldn't handle that it happened. So he got in his car, left home with a shot gun, drove to a secluded spot, and committed suicide. Everyone at work was shocked, and couldn't believe it, at first, because no one knew he had gotten lime disease. Once everyone knew, then they better understood why he did it.

I’m learning more about repelling critters from this thread than I ever have, and I’ve been in the woods my entire life. I can offer a treatment for chiggers that works for me. First understand that chiggers live off the ground which is why we pick them up walking through weeds. Next is to roll up pants legs and sleeves and spray with high deet content spray along with around your collar. That takes care of the vast majority for me. Should you get into them, and I’ve had over 200 bites on two occasions, understand that they have planted a young one in you that must be killed. The first time had me in the yard at 2 am buck naked rubbing myself down with a gasoline rag, because the recommended kerosene wasn’t available. It worked but still itched til the bites themselves healed. Untreated they go on for close to a week and make a person miserable. I recently also tried a treatment from years back,Absorbine linament. An older family friend got into no see ums and used this for arthritis pain and such. The area he treated subsided by the next day and the others went for much longer before they left him alone. I used this on some no see ums a while back and the burning itch was gone in about 36 hours and the few chiggers I get give me almost no discomfort after treating. The smell is tough but the results are good for me and worth a try for you. About $8 for the stuff, worth every cent.

Never tried it myself but an old boss of mine, raised near Astor, grew up with a cotton string around wrists, ankles and waist that had been soaked in kerosene. His mom always insisted on this when he was young. He got older and said”I don’t need that!” Got chewed up hunting once and never doubted mom again. Hope some of this helps someone.

Got RMSF several years ago, never got my energy level back up to the point it was. I quit any activity while they are out thick or I am real careful of where I walk and use plenty of bug spray. No more turkey hunting or spring squirrel , also no more bow hunting, I wear them out during muzzle loader season though

Permethrin also works on garden pests too.
When I was a kid, there was a product called Chigger Chaser. It worked, found out it is mostly sulfur powder. Sulfur powder still works on chiggers.

I must be lucky. I've spent the majority of my lifetime outside, all over the world. Been bitten by most things and have yet make a trip to the ER for it. Also seen those who are highly allergic go into shock and we had to get them medical treatment immediately, chopper life flight. Thanks for the info. I doubt I'll use it, however I will stash the info in the back of my mind in case someone I know does need it.

Before you get too self confident study up on the body's response you continued allergens being introduced, and hope that someone around you can help in the event you have a sudden reaction.

In dealing with my red meat allergy, I have also found that gelatin which is in many foods as a thickening agent is a product of red meat and has to be avoided as well. Reading every label is a pain in the butt, but it is better than having a bad reaction. I went the first year only eating seafood and poultry (some can't eat dairy, but I was able to.) This allergy seems to go away for some people over time, as it did for me with pork. Unfortunately I'm still not able to eat beef or lamb, but my blood test numbers are getting better. Can't wait for my next big juicy burger! Stay well and tight lines to all.
