My Wife is in a very melancholy mood

We decided to go fishing yesterday. The high there was predicted to be 106. But, we decided to go and get off the lake early. With this disease ongoing the lake is closed 3 days a week and only open from 7:00 am to 5:00pm. So there is really no escaping the heat. It is just hot and hotter.
Anyway we get on the lake at 7 and I hit an area with some rocky points and a little brush on them. Thought I might catch a few crappie and or at least a few white bass moving through. Hit this point and the helix lit up with shad. I could see a few crappie around one bush. After catching a few white bass, I had something heavy hit my jig. Now this is the same lake my wife caught a state record walleye in back in 1985. Yea we are aged. The walleye was 32.5 inches long and weighed 15 lbs 10 ounces.

Back to the story. Whatever it was that hit my jig was big, and it moved away from the point into deeper water. Don't know how I got so lucky. I tired it out and it came up to the surface right at the boat. Then decided to move from the front to the back all the while giving us a great look at it. It was a huge walleye. As big or bigger than wife's state record. It was too big for the net and wife couldn't get the net positioned near the head. So she grabs the line to guide the heard into the net. I yell don't grab the line and pop, It was gone. Wife is heartbroken and I am shocked. All is well now though, except she keeps saying she is sorry, very, very sorry. Perhaps it is time to mention a new boat?
But, seriously, it was a huge walleye!

What a heartbreak. At least you were able to see it. Still swimming though for future trips reason to keep going heat or not.

Time to get a bigger net?

Grabbing the line and tightening the drag while fighting a fish has been the reasons many a big fish have not been brought to hand.

Dang, that is a rough break literately. That's fishing though when the adrenaline is pumping sometimes the best decisions aren't made. At least you got to struggle with the beast and take a look at him. On a side note, I just spent 3 days earlier this week fishing in your home state. Man, what beautiful country you folks have out there! I was a great deal north of you in Red River, but the fishing was good and the weather and scenery even better! Yep, may wanna leverage that new boat deal quick

Bummer!! The big one always gets away! At least that is how my stories go sometimes. My dad said "They don't get big by getting caught." He was right!! Keep going and you will have another chance. There is no telling what will be on the end of your line.

Something similar happened to me and my wife this year on vacation. We were fishing on big Crooked Lake in Wisconsin and she caught a smallmouth that look to be 22 + in. She was devastated when the fish at the boat threw the hook finally. At the boat and smack me in the forehead with the bobber. I thought it was an awesome night of fishing but she was devastated that she didn't get it in the boat.

It would have beaten my personal best by 4in at least!!!

man that breaks my heart , poor thing ,everyone got all excited and it went right fast to the one that got away .
not sure how many people over the years have tried to help me and either grabbed my line or tried to .
bout 3 months ago a guy tried to help me land a big old buster black bass and bent down and tried to grab my line as it swam by .
i know he thinks i am an not so nice guy as i yelled really loud DONT TOUCH my line .
but to be positive for sure if he did i would NOT have got to hold it up for some photos .
and he would NOT have got to see its tail sticking way out the 5 gallon bucket when he left for home with it .
tell her its not a big deal and in the end it really aint .
besides a bit down the road its going to be fun to tease her about it and its a great fish story
