Now that is Fresh Crappie good!
But to be sure 17 is NOT !
I told the wife I will do the fish handling on my visit to the water before work .
So I set off with my trusty new Shakespeare (made in china) and my Shimano (made in Japan ) and my boots (made in Justin Texas ) and i used the long forgotten tried and true method to ketch me some crappie fish to eat . I toted me an ice chest with a 1 gallon frozen water block in it and a 5 gallon bucket to transport said dinner to the ice chest .
The method I employed is called get your jig wet , i have found a really wet jig often puts me on fish and this quick walk in visit to the water was no different .
They were very finicky as is somewhat often the case in the summer months . The bites were really light pecks for the most part . I missed a very high number of takes and tossed back about 2 to 3 times what went home with me . No fish in the mix were large and like stated a lot were under the legal minimum .
I often keep a little head count as i put fish in the bucket to take home , I try to stop between 15 and 20 for several reasons .
1 ...dont want to clean a limit
2 ....dont need to clean a limit
3 ....dont want to carry a limit
4 ....dont want to worry about being one over the limit either !
I imagine if I wanted I could have added 8 to make it 25 ,but it aint me .
Lost more than normal for whatever reason , am blaming the cheap j hooks this time
Said fish went home to the knife and 3 hit the oven for a fresh baked fish dinner , 5 will go whole to my boss at work and the other 3 bags are in my freezer .
In synopsis I prolly wont keep none for a bit....or harvest shall we say ....for a couple months .
The fish were holding really tight to the bottom in 12 to 14 foot of water and liked it drug past them VERY slowly . Used off the shelf tube baits because that's what was in my pocket and 6 lb mono . 8 am to 10 am and got to work shortly after I left the water .
Got home and the wife said WOW they were biting good ... I said not to bad and the good news is any fish I wanted to keep actually found its way into the ice chest THIS TIME !
