    Default Filleting a fish

I’ve never kept count of the amount of fish I clean a year but 99% of the time it’s with an electric. I can’t recall ever “chunking” one up....always nice pretty filets and carcasses with almost zero meat left

Now..Jimmy didn't do THAT bad...lol. I agree with you. I hate to waste any meat. If I could cook them all whole with bones, I would do it all the time. But my wife and family are now spoiled with fillets...even for bream. In the 80's and earlier, it was always whole crappie and bream and "steaked" catfish. When I was little, my mom would pick the bones out for me. I got a rather large catfish bone stuck in my throat at 4 years old and had to go to the emergency room. I still rather eat the whole or "steaked" fish. I ain't skeered!

I use both, depends on what's being cleaned.

A bunch of walleye, electric knife and fillet knives to trim.
A pile of perch, bearpaw scaler electric knife and fillet knives to trim
    Crappie, fillet knife
bluegill sometimes I scale them other times I skin them and I always use a fillet knife on them.

My favorite fillet knife is a birch handled Rapala with a 4 inch blade

I’m sold on the the bubba blade cordless now.
Like others I started out with a rapala. Did that for 30yr then 10yrs or so of electric mister-twister.
Now the bubba cordless, I use for fish, carving turkey, and even deboning my deer meat to cross state lines. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still use fixed blade for fine manipulation like cutting the ribs out or trimming.

Let me back up a bit and apologize , i wasnt trying to hurt anyones feelings and you most certainly should use whatever gives you the best results . Sorry if it seemed like i was saying you should never use an electric knife , i have a few buds that are pretty darn good with them .

Old school here, but I don't catch piles of fish. Electric knives make great re-gifts though

Glad to hear the comments of conscious electric knife users but like Ketchn I too have seen "some" butcher their fish with a smile and while recording it and bragging on how fast their best on the market filet knife works...... I'd be embarrassed..... Seriously it's not all about how fast you clean whatever and how many but taking pride and respecting what The All Mighty has allowed to bring home for your family.......
I hope you all didn't take what he said personal but do know SOME need to hear wasting a resource is not appreciated.....
Good post Ketchum..... And definitely no apologies needed....
