Watching this to see if I can’t learn something new.
In my neck of the woods mornings have been great.
However With the heat I prefer mornings.
It seems with a full moon, evenings are better.

I'll also be curious to see what people post here. I don't go out much in the morning, but I have noticed that when I go to my usual spot, if I get there a little too early nothing is biting. If I wait until about 7pm though I can't keep them off the dock.

During July and August I arrive on station at about 8:30 a.m. I catch crappie from then until I leave at around 1:00 p.m. Been fishing this spot for the past 3 years. Hoping it stays true this year. I fish in 21 feet of water and usually get the crappie at about 7-10 feet deep. Sometimes the crappie will be on the bottom at 21 feet but usually when I let the jig hit the bottom I will catch KY bass which most of the time are under the crappie. More often than not I will try to stay under the crappie to catch the KY bass.....they are a lot more fun. The crappie and KY bass hang at the spot due to tons of baby shad....maybe just a little bit bigger than the Trout Magnet I fish with. The few times I have stayed longer than 1:00 p.m. they will bite all through the heat of the day... but the heat usually sends me home.

    Regards

Casting jigs to cover close to the bank ... early AM til about 11AM ... but that usually depends on shade being over the water above that cover. Once that shade is gone, the fish seem to move out from there. Or so it always seemed so, but they may have just simply buried deeper into the cover.

During the hot of the day .... 11AM - 5PM ... I've mostly found them to be out roaming the flats, following Shad schools. That's when Pushing jigs or cranks is my preferred method.

These are representative of my experiences, but on two separate lakes. I really haven't had much recent experience on late afternoon to late evening fishing in Summer, as I'm usually worn out from the heat by early afternoon.

Thank you for all the replies, it is interesting to hear about the different habits we develop. Being fairly new to this crappie fishing I am still developing my habits and trying to find which lake to fish repeatedly.

it helps to understand how crappie go about their life . crappie often feed shallow at night so really early and really late it might pay to look in less than normal depths they hold at during the daylight at your local lake in the summer months .
now mind you this , crappie break all the rules and just when you think its better one time verses another they will prove you wrong .
I like mornings myself ,for several reasons .
1 ....coolest part of the day ...less chance of heat stroke
2 .... they are often still feeding pretty hard
3 .... coolest part of the day ....less chance of heat stroke
    rinse and repeat my friend
p.s. if you can stand the heat in the kitchen my pick is midday in the summer ,set up under a bridge somewhere preferably or under a big straw hat out in deep timber or pitching under docks ,these are the most predictable daylight scenarios this time of year for me .

Good topic. I have switched to the morning for two reasons. The first is the heat and that a lot of my stream is shaded in the morning, and Covid has really upped the number of folks in the park, and many are very sloppy observing any kind of safety. I can be suited up and on the water before 8:00, and far away from anyone. The kids and families are more late morning and after lunch. I feel I do give up a little bite in the early hours, but somewhere around 9:00 or so the switch gets turned on and I will have over 2 hours of good fishing working the stream. Somewhere after 11:00 it is like the feed switch gets turned off and that will be it until after 3:00. The park is closed at night but I would suppose top water might be really good. The mornings provide enough good fishing for a 1/2 day on the water.

I'm more into the AM before 1100, if not it will be after dark when the temp gets over 99 degrees...

My response pertains more to fishing conditions......my comfort versus the crappie bite. The yachts, jet skis, and wakeboarders usually don’t arrive until after 10:00 a.m., but stay until dark. Unless you enjoy a rocking boat, go in the morning.
