I'm looking into the battle born brand 12v 100ah lithiums. They state you can use your existing charger to charge them.

I would check the manufacturer's recommendation on the brand your looking at for charging. Also, good question about the alternator for cranking battery if you go lithium.

Please be careful with chargers. If not rated for the right chemistry you can have a fire with intensity and temperatures you can’t believe. We use lithium with RC electrics, and one member barely saved his house. His charger had multiple options, but he had it on lead acid battery.

I've been using the same dual pro charger I used on lead acid. About 6 months, no problem.

But will it damage my alternator? That’s my biggest concern now that I have all the other needed info.

If you read the various bbc forum postings on lithium batteries, the bass tourney fishermen are using the 125 amp batteries as their starting batteries for their big motors. As I understand it, the BMS of theses lithium batteries only allow so many amps per charging as a safety issue and will shut off in charging cycle I think the cut off is 14.6 amps of charging, So nobody in all the postings has had any issues. Some are using the Power Pole system to charge their big engine/electronics while fishing also. Best advice I can give you also is don’t be afraid to contact/call and talk to the various battery sales people as it’s constantly being engineered and changed or modified as technical issues like your asking,,in the early stages of developing lithium batteries for the Marine Industry to use and the BMS systems have constantly been upgraded. Some of the big engine users on bbc have been using lithium batteries now for as long as 5 yrs with no issues. As the users stack and use more electronics especially the larger screens, plus the addition of Mega 360 and Live Scope...some users are now using 4 and 5 lithiums when you figure all the electronics and a 36 v trolling motor. Your big motor may not charge your motor battery or you may not use the bog motor enough to replenish the charge while using so also, some users are carrying a jump starter as a backup especially while tourney fishing. Ionic now has a jump starter for example.

I know nothing about lithium batts. I am familiar with Banchee as I use their agms on our 4 wheelers and lawn mowers. No probs.

Here is a good jump starter for your boat engines. Buy Emergency Start | LithiumHub | Free Shipping. A lot of the bbc guys using lithiums for starter batteries that fish tournaments, use a jump starter as a backup especially if they have all their boat electronics hooked to their starting Lithium battery.
