Question ? Anyone painted there outboard ?

I'm wanting/needing to repaint an '87 Mariner, 115hp. Looking for input. The decals are shot, paint is toast.
Engine is currently off the boat, on a rolling stand. Would apply it with hvlp gun.
    Can I use Rust-Oleum?
    Tractor paint?
    With a hardener?
Does it need to be a higher temp paint?
Clear coat over it when done?

Slab or mods, if in wrong area, please move.

Check out "This Old Outboard" Videos on youtube. Believe he has a video or two on painting out board motors. I think he uses VHT automotive high heat engine paint in spray cans you can get at most any automotive parts store...Trick is to allow enough time for paint to actually cure, and not just dry to the touch. Hope this helped, and good luck.

How nice do you want it to be even with hardener tractor enamel fades terribly. For the nicest and lasting finish automotive basecoat clear coat. Takes a fare amount of prep if wanting a very nice finish but will hold up.

If you wanted to stay with a single stage paint is not cheap but Emron and hardner will work very well and has more hiding qualities then base clear. Emron is what is used on many commercial products.

THis is on my list of things to do. I started with restoring the gel coat with some sanding and polishing and next is restoring the motor paint.

Bricks thank you. I'll check into that.
As for longevity, the good news is, it's only outside when in use.
The roOsTer - post pics when you paint it, if you don't mind. Looks like you got a nice boat!

Will do! Thank you for the compliments. I'm thinking of using Semi-Flat paint. I've loved it on my Jeep and misc parts for other vehicles.

I used rattle can rustoleum in the 90's on an outboard. it held up fine, I always hated the finish though...but I tried to speckle it...
