    Default Interesting technique

I watched an old gentleman and his granddaughter crappie fishing in what I thought to be a very unique way recently, The water depth they were in was 5-8’ and cloudy. They were using minnows,a small split shot without a cork, fishing around tree stumps.
The old guy would back his 12’ boat right up to a stump, and tie off.He would lie down with just his head showing,he would then drop the minnow right behind the boat and basically tight line.I watched him catch perhaps 10 crappie in this manner.
I guess it was the rarity of this style that struck me,his rod was similar to an icefishing rod, perhaps 30” long.In an age of long fishing rods used for vertical jigging, and dipping,it was interesting to see this approach for sure.

He obviously proved that it works, but wonder why he uses that technique?

Because it works for him at that spot. I was fishing for flounder this Asian fella walks up with a fishing pole, baits it with a strip of raw chicken and shows me that chicken was more productive than any live bait I had in my bucket. It worked for him

My guess is that he was trying to limit the movement the fish could see? I tried fishing with a snoopy pole once, I’ll never ask another kid to use one ever again. What a handicap it was.

I use this method a lot. You can get a good hook set since it is vertical fishing at it’s simplest. I use 4’ poles. Drop the bait over the side and hook the line with your index finger to detect bites.

I don't know about lying down but I have used my ice fishing rods in my boat vertically fishing. I usually use my Hummingbird flasher also. Works great when conditions are right.
